Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has denied a report by Axios claiming that his administration offered Iran potential sanctions relief and access to frozen Iranian funds in exchange for progress on its nuclear programme.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had offered Iran “nothing” and rejected the Axios report as untrue. He also criticized the publication over its reporting and called for the report to be retracted.
The Axios report, published on September 28, cited US officials as saying Trump had proposed economic relief and access to frozen funds in return for concrete steps by Tehran to curb its nuclear programme. The report also said the proposal was part of renewed diplomatic efforts involving Qatar and Pakistan.
Reuters reported that Trump subsequently denied making such an offer, while Iranian officials continued to signal that diplomatic discussions remained possible. Separate mediated contacts between Washington and Tehran have been taking place as both sides seek a way to end the conflict.
The disagreement over whether any sanctions-relief proposal was formally made comes as Iran and the United States remain divided over the conditions for ending hostilities, the nuclear programme, and the status of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has continued to communicate through regional intermediaries, while US officials have maintained that any agreement would need to address Washington’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.
The conflicting accounts highlight the uncertainty surrounding ongoing diplomatic efforts, with both public statements and mediated discussions continuing amid the broader US-Iran confrontation.
