Washington (HRNW)- US Senator Bernie Sanders has criticized President Donald Trump’s remarks on Iran at the United Nations General Assembly and called on Congress to take steps to end the ongoing US war with Iran.
Sharing a video of Trump’s September 22 speech on X, Sanders said there should be no discussion of “annihilating” the Iranian people. He described Trump’s threat as a war crime and characterized the conflict as illegal and unconstitutional. Sanders has previously made similar arguments about the need for congressional authorization of US military action against Iran.
In his statement, Sanders said the United States should not be associated with threats to destroy the Iranian population and urged Congress to assert its authority over military action. He called for an immediate end to the war.
During his address to the UN General Assembly on September 22, Trump said the United States faced a choice between reaching a deal with Iran and taking action that could “annihilate” the country if an agreement was not reached. He also said negotiations remained possible and that his administration was pursuing diplomatic contacts with Tehran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio separately said Washington remained open to meeting Iranian representatives at the UN, although no meeting had been scheduled at that point.
Sanders has consistently challenged the administration’s handling of the Iran conflict, arguing that Congress, rather than the president acting alone, has constitutional authority over declarations of war. His latest remarks add to divisions in Washington over the scope of presidential war powers and the continuation of US military operations against Iran.
Diplomatic activity between Washington and Tehran is continuing alongside the military confrontation, with Pakistan, Qatar, and other countries involved in efforts to facilitate dialogue.
