Beijing (HRNW)- An Iranian Mahan Air commercial flight has landed in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou despite a US warning that foreign entities providing services to Iranian airlines could face sanctions.
According to FlightRadar24, Mahan Air flight IRM093 arrived in Guangzhou on Wednesday, September 23. The flight was shown as landing at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, although it was not listed on the airport’s official website, leaving the flight-tracking data as the primary public indication of the landing.
The development came on the same day that US restrictions targeting Iranian airlines were set to take effect. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had warned that airports, fuel suppliers, ticketing companies, and other entities providing services to Iranian carriers could face serious financial consequences, including exclusion from the US dollar-based financial system.
Mahan Air has been under US sanctions for years. Washington alleges that the airline has facilitated activities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, while Iranian authorities reject the allegations.
Despite the US pressure, Mahan Air has continued operating flights to China. FlightRadar24 records show recent Mahan Air services between Tehran and Guangzhou, with additional Iranian flights operating to Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai.
China has maintained its opposition to unilateral sanctions that it says lack a basis in international law or authorization from the UN Security Council. Beijing’s position has highlighted differences between China and the United States over measures targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
The reported Guangzhou landing comes amid increasing restrictions on Iranian international air services, with several countries reducing or suspending services and foreign support for Iranian carriers following Washington’s latest sanctions measures.
