New York (HRNW)- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for reforms to the United Nations and its Security Council while addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. He also spoke about Islamophobia, Palestine, Gaza, Kashmir, and other international conflicts.
Erdoğan said hostility toward Islam and Islamophobia were spreading globally and called for greater efforts to counter intolerance. He also argued that the United Nations was facing limitations in fulfilling its role in maintaining international peace and security and urged changes to the international decision-making system.
On Palestine, Erdoğan expressed concern over Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas being unable to attend the General Assembly in person for a second consecutive year. He said Türkiye would continue to advocate for an independent and sovereign Palestinian state and called on countries that have not recognized Palestine to reconsider their positions.
Erdoğan also highlighted the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, calling for international action to protect Palestinians and stressing the need to preserve the basis for a two-state solution. He has also called for continued international attention to humanitarian conditions affecting civilians.
Addressing the Kashmir issue, Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s position that disputes in South Asia should be addressed through dialogue and negotiations within the framework of the UN Charter and relevant resolutions.
The Turkish president further called for structural reform of the UN Security Council, arguing that a system in which decisions affecting more than 190 countries depend on five permanent members does not adequately represent the international community.
Erdoğan also discussed other regional and global conflicts, including Iran and Ukraine, and emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions. In a separate meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, he again discussed Gaza, Iran, Ukraine, maritime security, and international efforts to address regional crises.
