At least 46,000 people have been displaced in southwestern Yemen following renewed fighting between Houthi forces and pro-government forces, according to the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The UN reported that the latest escalation has created rapidly changing front lines and increased humanitarian needs. The fighting is also raising concerns over the security of the Red Sea and the wider regional implications of renewed conflict in Yemen.
UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg warned the Security Council that Yemen had entered a “new and more dangerous phase of war”, with the renewed violence threatening to reverse years of relative calm.
The UN has urged all sides to protect civilians and return to a political process aimed at ending the conflict.
