The UN Security Council has unanimously agreed to extend the arms embargo covering Sudan’s Darfur region for another month, while negotiations continue over a US proposal to expand restrictions nationwide.
The decision comes as Sudan’s war between the military and paramilitary forces continues to fuel displacement, hunger and allegations of atrocities. The conflict has lasted more than three years and created one of the world’s largest humanitarian emergencies.
The United States is pushing for broader restrictions, while Russia has strongly opposed expanding the embargo beyond Darfur. China has also expressed concerns that wider restrictions could worsen instability.
The month-long extension keeps the existing Darfur restrictions in place while Security Council members continue negotiations over possible further action.
