New York, United States (HRNW) – The United Nations is observing World Humanitarian Day on 19 August by honouring humanitarian personnel who risk their lives to provide assistance during wars, disasters and other crises. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on governments and armed groups to respect humanitarian law and ensure that aid workers can safely reach people in need. The day also commemorates the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, which killed 22 people, including humanitarian workers.
