Boston (HRNW)- A US federal court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Trump administration against Harvard University, which accused the university of failing to adequately protect Jewish and Israeli students from alleged harassment and discrimination.
According to Reuters, US District Judge Richard Stearns ruled that the government had failed to establish that Harvard was engaged in ongoing violations of federal civil rights laws.
The Trump administration filed the lawsuit in March, alleging that Jewish and Israeli students faced harassment and that Harvard officials had failed to provide adequate protection.
Judge Stearns said the government’s allegations were largely based on incidents surrounding protests against Israel’s war in Gaza during the 2023-24 academic year.
The court ruled that the relatively small number of incidents cited by the government in March 2025 were limited and isolated and did not establish continuing violations of civil rights law at the university.
The government had also alleged that Harvard failed to take appropriate action after being notified in June 2025 that the university was not complying with federal civil rights requirements.
The case involved Title VI, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color and national origin in educational programs receiving federal funding.
Judge Stearns concluded that the government had not presented sufficient evidence to demonstrate that Harvard was continuously violating federal civil rights law.
Harvard University and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the ruling.
