Beirut/Damascus (HRNW)- Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem has said he has no objection to meeting Syria’s current leadership and that a formal meeting between the two sides could take place when the time is appropriate.
In a televised address, Naim Qassem said Hezbollah seeks positive, brotherly, and cooperative relations with Syria, adding that there is no obstacle to holding a public meeting if both parties consider it suitable.
This marks the first time the Hezbollah leader has publicly expressed support for the possibility of direct contacts or meetings with Syria’s new leadership.
Hezbollah has supported the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad throughout much of the Syrian civil war. During that period, Syria was also regarded as a key route for the transfer of weapons and other supplies from Iran to Lebanon.
However, after the new Syrian government came to power in December 2024, the regional political landscape changed significantly, creating uncertainty over future relations between Syria and Hezbollah.
According to political observers, Naim Qassem’s latest remarks may signal Hezbollah’s intention to normalize relations with Syria’s new leadership as part of a broader strategy to adapt to the changing political dynamics in the region.
Experts say that if a formal meeting between the two sides takes place in the future, it could have implications not only for Lebanon and Syria, but also for the broader political landscape of the Middle East.
