New York (HRNW)- The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) have called on Iran to end its arming of and support for Yemen’s Houthi movement, while demanding that the Houthis immediately halt military operations and attacks against civilian shipping.
The statement was issued by the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the European Union’s High Representative, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The G7 condemned continued Houthi attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia, including attacks affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure. The ministers said the escalation poses risks to regional stability, global energy security, maritime security, and international trade.
The group urged the Houthis to stop all military actions, threats, and attacks against civilian vessels and to return to the political process in good faith. The G7 also called on Iran to end its military support for the Houthis, citing relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
The statement highlighted the strategic importance of the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, stressing the need to maintain maritime safety and freedom of navigation to prevent prolonged disruptions to global supply chains, particularly energy, fertilizer, and food shipments.
The G7 further reaffirmed support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government and for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s efforts to achieve a negotiated, inclusive, and Yemeni-led political settlement.
