Tehran (HRNW)- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has departed for New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, saying Iran will use the international forum to present its position and convey the concerns of its people.
Speaking to journalists before his departure, Pezeshkian said this year’s General Assembly is being held under the theme of “trust” and expressed hope that the gathering could contribute to restoring confidence among nations and creating conditions for resolving conflicts through dialogue.
The Iranian president said his delegation would also raise issues concerning the conflict and what Tehran describes as harm suffered by Iranian citizens. He specifically referred to incidents involving civilians in Minab and Lamerd, saying Iran would present its position on these matters before the international community.
A recent UN fact-finding mission reported that there were reasonable grounds to believe US strikes on a school in Minab and a sports facility in Lamerd violated international humanitarian law. The mission’s findings are investigative conclusions rather than final judicial rulings.
Pezeshkian’s visit comes amid continued tensions between Iran and the United States. At the same time, Washington has indicated that it remains open to diplomatic contact with Tehran during the UN General Assembly, although US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no meeting between the two sides had been scheduled.
Iran has also conveyed proposals for ending hostilities through mediators, while Reuters reported that the Iranian delegation in New York has authority to pursue diplomatic discussions. Tehran has said that easing US military pressure and lifting its blockade would be important conditions for broader negotiations.
Pezeshkian is expected to address the General Assembly and outline Iran’s position on the conflict, regional security, and diplomatic efforts before an international audience.
