New York (HRNW)- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly and lead Iran’s diplomatic delegation during the high-level session. The UN General Assembly high-level week is taking place from September 18 to 28.
Following his arrival, Araghchi held a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. According to Iranian media reports, the discussion focused on the General Assembly agenda and the latest regional developments.
Speaking to Iranian journalists, Araghchi said Tehran’s main objective is to use the United Nations as an international platform to present Iran’s position and advocate for what it considers the rights and interests of the Iranian people.
The Iranian foreign minister is also expected to hold meetings with officials and foreign ministers from several countries on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
The United States had earlier approved visas for an Iranian delegation including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and essential staff to attend the UN session in New York. The delegation is subject to restrictions on its movements while in the United States.
Iranian media had initially reported that President Pezeshkian would lead the delegation, while the latest reports indicate that Araghchi is leading the diplomatic team in New York. Pezeshkian is also expected to attend the General Assembly and address world leaders.
Araghchi’s visit comes amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States, with the UN gathering providing an important diplomatic forum for discussions on regional security, the conflict, and efforts to revive negotiations.
