Karachi (HRNW) – The Sindh Government has established the province’s first Speed Breeding Laboratory in Tando Jam to develop new and improved varieties of wheat.
Sindh Agriculture Minister Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mehr stated that the modern agricultural laboratory has been established at the Directorate General Agriculture Research Sindh, Tando Jam, where advanced speed breeding technology will be used to develop wheat varieties with higher yields, climate resilience, and resistance against diseases.
He said that the new research facility will focus on developing wheat varieties that mature in a shorter period and provide higher production per acre, which will help increase wheat output and strengthen food security in the province.
The Agriculture Minister emphasized that modern agricultural research is essential to address the challenges of climate change, rising temperatures, drought conditions, and crop diseases, while improving productivity and benefiting farmers.
Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mehr appreciated the efforts of the research wing of the Agriculture Department and said that the Sindh Government is committed to strengthening agricultural research institutions and promoting modern technologies.
He said the primary objective of the research is to develop wheat varieties that:
- Mature in a shorter time period
- Provide higher yields per acre
- Better withstand climate change, heat, drought, and diseases
The minister added that through this advanced research, special attention is being given to developing wheat varieties suitable for different climatic conditions of Sindh, enabling farmers to achieve more profitable and sustainable agricultural production in the future.
