Tehran, Iran (HRNW)- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the United States honoring its commitments under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to Iranian news agencies, Araghchi described the US fulfillment of its obligations as the fundamental condition for Iran to reopen the strategically important waterway. He said discussions on reopening the strait cannot move forward until Washington meets its commitments under the agreement.
Araghchi clarified that talks between Iran and Oman are not aimed at securing the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, he said the discussions are focused on developing a new mechanism for maritime traffic and shipping routes.
He added that Iran would provide relevant countries with details of the agreement reached with Oman and plans concerning the proposed maritime route.
The talks are taking place as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted by regional tensions. The waterway is a critical global route for the transportation of oil and natural gas.
Iranian officials said no immediate final agreement is expected from the regional meeting in Oman, but dialogue is continuing on maritime routes and the future of shipping operations through the strait.
