Karachi (HRNW): In a major operation against financial crimes, the Seaport Team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has successfully dismantled an international Hawala/Hundi network operating out of Karachi. The raid resulted in the recovery of millions of rupees in cash and the arrest of key cartel members, including a ship captain and a marine launch owner.
Smuggling of Iranian Liquor and Money Laundering
According to the FIA spokesperson, law enforcement officials recovered PKR 3.8 million in cash during the targeted raid. Initial interrogations revealed that the arrested suspects were heavily involved in the smuggling of contraband Iranian liquor into Pakistan. The massive proceeds generated from this illicit trade were being systematically laundered and transferred into Pakistan through illegal Hawala/Hundi channels to bypass regulatory oversight.
The Dubai Financial Link Uncovered
Further investigation into the network’s transnational operations exposed a lucrative Dubai connection. The suspects confessed that a marine launch docked in Dubai was recently sold for PKR 8 million. The entire capital generated from this asset sale was also funneled into Pakistan using the same illegal, parallel banking channels instead of official banking networks.
FIA authorities have registered formal cases under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act and Anti-Money Laundering frameworks against the accused. Special teams have been mobilized to track financial trails, identify local facilitators receiving the funds, and apprehend international accomplices operating from Iran and Dubai.
