Aceh (HRNW)- Under local laws, people who drink alcohol and couples who have sex without marriage are being punished severely. According to the report, such couples were publicly punished with 140 lashes, which has drawn sharp criticism from human rights circles.
Authorities say that these measures are being taken to maintain social morality in accordance with religious and cultural traditions. However, international media have described the measure as inhumane and excessive, and human rights organizations have urged the Indonesian government to reform such laws.
Families of those convicted and human rights groups have also protested and the issue has been expressed concern at the international level.
