The UN World Meteorological Organization is warning that countries are entering a period in which abnormal water conditions are becoming increasingly common, with major changes being observed in rivers, groundwater and glaciers.
The UN weather agency says disruptions to the global water cycle are making it harder for governments and communities to prepare for droughts, floods and other water-related emergencies.
The warning highlights the importance of better water monitoring, early-warning systems and coordinated management of freshwater resources as climate-related changes affect water availability in different parts of the world.
The UN says stronger water information systems will be increasingly important for protecting communities, agriculture and ecosystems.
