Jerusalem (HRNW)- Israel is reportedly preparing to seek additional advanced weapons systems from the United States following Washington’s approval of a potential $24.3 billion sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, according to Israeli media reports. The proposed sale still requires approval by the US Congress.
According to reports citing Israeli defense sources, officials are preparing requests for additional US military capabilities in an effort to preserve Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region as Saudi Arabia seeks to acquire the F-35 aircraft.
The reported requests could include participation in the development and production of classified weapons systems, advanced interceptors for future Arrow defense systems, space-based capabilities, and advanced precision munitions. Israeli officials are also reported to be seeking weapons systems that Washington had previously declined to provide.
The United States approved the potential Saudi F-35 sale on September 17, including 48 aircraft and 49 associated engines, communications equipment, spare parts, and support. The State Department said the proposed sale would not alter the military balance in the region and would strengthen Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities.
Israel is currently the only country in the Middle East operating the F-35, and Israeli officials have previously expressed concern over the possibility of other regional states obtaining the aircraft. Reports indicate that maintaining Israel’s qualitative military advantage remains a central consideration in discussions surrounding the Saudi deal.
The reported Israeli requests come amid a broader increase in US arms sales to Saudi Arabia and heightened regional security tensions. The proposed F-35 sale remains subject to the US congressional process before it can be finalized.
