Tehran (HRNW)- Iran has ordered a Swedish diplomat to leave the country within 48 hours, in a reciprocal move following Sweden’s expulsion of an Iranian embassy official in Stockholm.
Sweden announced on September 16 that it had summoned Iran’s ambassador and ordered an Iranian embassy official to leave the country, citing activities it said were incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Swedish authorities did not publicly specify the exact nature of the alleged activities.
Iran rejected Sweden’s allegations as baseless. The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador in Tehran to formally protest Stockholm’s decision and subsequently informed the ambassador that a Swedish diplomat must leave Iran within 48 hours.
Iranian authorities also accused Sweden of pursuing what they described as destructive policies toward Iran and alleged that Stockholm was hosting groups hostile to the Islamic Republic. These allegations were made by Iranian officials and have not been independently established.
Swedish authorities have said Iran has been involved in activities they consider a security threat to Sweden, while Tehran has denied such accusations. The diplomatic dispute adds to tensions in relations between the two countries.
The reciprocal expulsions mark a new diplomatic confrontation between Stockholm and Tehran, with both sides defending their respective actions and rejecting the other’s allegations.
