The United Nations World Food Programme has announced the appointment of Luke J. Lindberg as its next Executive Director, following consultations between the UN Secretary-General, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the WFP Executive Board.
Lindberg currently serves as the Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs at the US Department of Agriculture. He will succeed Cindy McCain, who served as WFP Executive Director from April 2023 until May 2026.
The appointment comes as WFP reports that as many as 266 million people are facing acute food insecurity because of conflict, extreme weather and economic hardship.
The WFP Executive Board president said the appointment comes at a time when addressing global hunger remains an urgent humanitarian challenge.
