UN Says Yemen Displacement Has Surged as Fighting Intensifies

The United Nations says renewed fighting in Yemen has caused a rapid increase in displacement, with more than 110,000 people displaced since the start of August according to the latest UN briefing.

The UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs said the escalation has expanded across several front lines and has also increased volatility around the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a major maritime route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

UN officials have called on all parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law and prevent further escalation. Humanitarian agencies are also responding to growing needs among displaced families inside Yemen and people crossing into Djibouti.
