A new UN Gender Snapshot 2026 report says progress toward gender equality remains substantially behind the targets established under the Sustainable Development Goals.

The report says that, at the current pace, achieving gender equality would take 171 years, while none of the indicators under Sustainable Development Goal 5 are currently on track to meet the original 2030 deadline.

UN Women and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs also report that institutions created to advance gender equality have faced significant weakening, with one in three such institutions losing power over the past two years.

The report examines trends in women’s leadership, economic participation, poverty, education, climate action and other areas affecting gender equality.
