Madhya Pradesh (HRNW)- A police officer who took bribes was sentenced to four years in prison, where constable Vivek Sahu was sentenced to four years in prison for accepting a small bribe of Rs 2,000.
According to Indian media, Vivek Sahu had demanded a bribe by threatening to arrest a person named Devi Singh in a cheque bounce case. The victim filed a complaint with the Lokayukta (local grievance redressal body), after which the officer was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
Initially, the trial court had sentenced Vivek Sahu to four years in prison under the Prevention of Corruption Act, which the accused challenged in the High Court. However, the Supreme Court upheld the trial court’s decision, cancelled the accused’s bail bonds and sent him to jail for four years.
This case proves that a heinous act like bribery, no matter how small the amount, can lead to severe punishment.
