Lahore (HRNW) — Punjab has made significant progress toward reforming personal laws governing the Christian community, with a high-level technical committee reaching consensus on presenting the proposed Christian Marriage Amendment Act before the provincial assembly.
The second meeting of the high-level technical committee, constituted on the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, was chaired by Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora.
The committee reviewed proposed amendments to the Christian Marriage Act and agreed on a unified course of action for introducing the legislation in the Punjab Assembly.
The meeting also decided to introduce an online registration system for Christian marriages. According to the provincial government, the system is aimed at eliminating irregularities in marriage records, improving transparency and ensuring better protection and preservation of official records.
The committee also reviewed proposals concerning the adoption and reform of Christian personal laws. Officials from the relevant department briefed participants, while Dr. Noel Khokhar also delivered a presentation.
The meeting further decided to provide religious education and examination facilities to prisoners belonging to minority religions. A committee has been constituted to nominate verified teachers and oversee arrangements for religious education, examinations and the appointment of certified instructors.
Members of the Punjab Assembly, representatives of government departments, legal experts and education specialists attended the meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora said significant progress had been made toward reforming the personal laws of the Christian community in Punjab.
Arora said protecting the rights of the Christian community was a commitment of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, adding that reforms in Christian personal laws were part of the provincial government’s minority-friendly vision.
He said the Punjab government was committed to providing effective legal protection and facilities to the Christian community.
According to Arora, the high-level technical committee was developing a consensus-based framework for reforms in Christian marriage laws, while religious, legal and educational experts were being consulted during the legislative process.
He said the agreement to present the Christian Marriage Amendment Act before the provincial assembly was a positive development. He added that online registration of Christian marriages would help improve transparency and safeguard official records.
Arora further said a modern and transparent system was being developed to protect the legal rights of Christian families, while all relevant stakeholders were being taken into confidence in the lawmaking process.
