UNHCR Raises Concern After Malaysia Returns 1,476 People to Myanmar

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (HRNW)

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, has voiced concern over Malaysia’s return of 1,476 people to Myanmar, where civil war and a severe humanitarian situation continue.

In a statement reported by the UN Office at Geneva on 1 October, UNHCR called attention to the risks facing people returned to a country experiencing ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges.

The agency’s concern places renewed focus on refugee protection and the principle that people should not be returned to places where they may face serious threats to their safety.
