Lahore (HRNW)- Fossil fuels are contributing more than twice as much black carbon pollution in Lahore as biomass burning, according to a PM2.5 source apportionment study conducted jointly by the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change and SUPARCO.
The study recorded Lahore’s total black carbon concentration at 3.82 micrograms per cubic meter. Of this, fossil fuel sources accounted for 2.58 micrograms per cubic meter, while biomass burning—including the combustion of wood, crop residues and other organic materials—contributed 1.24 micrograms per cubic meter.
According to the report, the highest black carbon concentration was recorded on August 30, reaching 3.82 micrograms per cubic meter. The study was conducted across Lahore from August 15 to August 31, 2026.
The objective was to identify the major sources of black carbon within PM2.5 particles to support effective measures for controlling air pollution in the city. The findings indicate that fossil fuel consumption, including emissions from vehicles and other fuel-burning sources, is a significant contributor to black carbon pollution.
Experts say black carbon consists of extremely fine particulate matter that can pose serious health risks. Exposure may contribute to respiratory problems, heart disease, and irritation of the eyes, nose and throat.
