LAHORE (HRNW)- Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has announced that his party will knock on the doors of the judiciary against the imposition of the petroleum levy, describing it as an act of “cruelty” toward the common man.
Addressing a press conference at Mansoora, Lahore, he highlighted that citizens are currently paying approximately Rs. 125 in various taxes on every single liter of petrol. He termed the government’s recent decision to reduce petrol prices by only Rs. 12 as “regrettable” and insufficient.
Key Demands and Economic Concerns:
-
Price Reduction: Hafiz Naeem demanded that the price of petrol be brought down to Rs. 250 per liter.
-
Abolition of Levy: He called for the immediate removal of the petroleum levy to stimulate economic activity and provide genuine relief to the public.
-
Tax Inequity: He pointed out the stark disparity in the tax system, noting that while the billionaire class evades taxes, common citizens—particularly motorcyclists—are forced to bear the brunt.
-
Revenue Impact: He criticized the government for generating Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 billion through the petroleum levy at the expense of the struggling populace.
On International Relations:
Commenting on the geopolitical situation, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman welcomed the negotiations between Iran and the United States, acknowledging Pakistan’s positive role in the process. He expressed hope for the success of these talks, though he noted with concern that progress appeared to have stalled abruptly due to the influence of global powers.
