Afghan Girl Arrested for Disguising as Man to Support Family in Helmand

Helmand (HRNW)- Taliban forces in Afghanistan’s Helmand province have arrested a 13-year-old girl, identified as Nooria, for allegedly disguising herself as a male to seek employment and support her family. Foreign media reports indicate that Nooria had been working at a local café for the past three years under the male identity of “Noor Ahmad” to navigate the restrictive environment and economic hardships facing women in the region.

The case came to light after a video of the young girl went viral on social media, where she explained the desperate circumstances that led to her decision. Following the death of her father, Nooria became the sole breadwinner for her family. Facing extreme poverty and limited options for female employment, she began wearing men’s clothing and adopting a male persona to secure a job. Despite her efforts to keep her true identity hidden, her secret was eventually discovered, leading to her subsequent detention by the local authorities.

The arrest has sparked an intense wave of reactions across social media platforms, with human rights activists and netizens highlighting the plight of Afghan women and girls. Critics argue that Nooria’s situation underscores the lack of basic rights and the severe economic challenges that force individuals into such extreme measures for survival. The incident has once again brought international attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the struggle for female empowerment in Afghanistan.
