The United Nations is warning of a rapidly deteriorating security situation in northern Ethiopia, where fighting has spread across multiple fronts and is increasingly disrupting humanitarian operations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed grave concern over reports of intensified fighting around Tigray and the spread of hostilities into neighbouring areas. The UN also reported the seizure and occupation of the airports of Mekelle, Axum and Shire, while calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately de-escalate tensions.
The UN is urging all sides to protect civilians and guarantee safe and unhindered humanitarian access. The developments have raised concern about the possibility of a wider conflict and further displacement.
