Moscow (HRNW) — Ramzan Kadyrov has been re-elected for a fifth term as head of Chechnya, receiving 99.85% of the vote, according to Russia’s Central Electoral Commission.
Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has led the predominantly Muslim North Caucasus region since 2007. His latest official vote share is slightly higher than the 99.73% recorded in the 2021 election.
The election was held alongside Russia’s parliamentary and regional elections. International observers have previously criticised the conduct of elections in Chechnya, while Kadyrov has rejected such criticism.
Human rights organisations have also accused Kadyrov’s administration of serious rights violations, including alleged repression of journalists and other groups. His administration has denied such allegations.
