KARACHI (HRNW): Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab distributed 20 electric bikes among the KMC Vigilance Squad during a ceremony at the KMC Head Office on Wednesday. This initiative aims to protect Karachi’s infrastructure and curb illegal activities, such as unauthorized road cutting and the theft of street lights or electrical wires by drug addicts. The Mayor emphasized that this squad is a crucial step toward ensuring that government property remains secure and functional for the citizens. The event was attended by Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, and various other KMC officials and elected representatives.
Commitment to Green Energy and Efficiency
Mayor Wahab highlighted that the transition to electric vehicles aligns with Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s vision to make KMC self-sustainable. He noted several key points regarding the agency’s modernization:
-
Cost Savings: By utilizing electric bikes instead of fuel-powered vehicles, the department will significantly reduce petrol expenses and lower the financial burden on the institution.
-
Charging Infrastructure: Charging stations have already been established at various locations to facilitate the personnel.
-
Solarization Program: The Jamshed Nusserwanjee Mehta Building has already been shifted to solar power, and plans are underway to solarize KMC hospitals and pumping stations to drastically cut electricity bills.
Urban Development and Political Commentary
Addressing urban challenges and local politics, the Mayor criticized the “poster politics” of opposition parties, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami. He stated that hanging banners and claiming credit for KMC-led projects—such as the construction of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan—does not solve public issues. He warned that strict action, including the sealing of businesses, would be taken against those involved in illegal banner placement. Furthermore, the Mayor announced the successful restoration of the OPD at the historic Spencer Eye Hospital, which will now offer free eye surgeries and modern medical facilities to the public.
National Defense and Global Diplomacy
On the national front, Barrister Murtaza Wahab lauded the diplomatic successes of President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He remarked that Pakistan has successfully emerged from international isolation, pointing to the JF-17 Thunder agreement initiated during President Zardari’s previous tenure as a cornerstone of national defense. He concluded by stating that the global community is once again recognizing Pakistan as a pivotal regional player, marking a significant diplomatic setback for adversaries.
