Karachi (HRNW)- The Sindh Local Government Amendment Act 2026 is likely to be passed today, despite strong objections from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
A 12-member special committee of the Sindh Assembly is scheduled to submit its report today. Sources said opposition parties have serious reservations about the proposed legislation and have complained that their recommendations were not incorporated.
MQM members have warned of a major protest if the bill is passed, while Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Muhammad Farooq has opposed the proposed provision allowing the appointment of an administrator.
The proposed legislation defines the powers and responsibilities of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairman, and Vice-Chairman and seeks to improve coordination between local government councils and provincial departments.
Under the proposed amendments, the process for local government elections would begin 120 days before the expiry of a council’s term. The outgoing elected representative would continue serving as administrator until the newly elected Mayor or Chairman takes charge.
The bill also proposes provisions for no-confidence motions against Union Council and Union Committee Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen. Such a resolution would require a two-thirds majority for approval.
Another proposed provision states that the Deputy Mayor or Vice-Chairman would serve as the convener of the respective council.
