German Minister Walks Out of Berlin Film Festival Ceremony After Gaza Remarks

Berlin (HRNW) – A controversy erupted at the Berlin Film Festival when German Minister Carsten Schneider walked out of an awards ceremony after remarks made by Palestinian-Syrian director Abdullah al-Khatib regarding the Gaza conflict.

Al-Khatib received an award for his film Chronicles from the Siege. During his acceptance speech, he accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and alleged that the German government was complicit. “The German government is a partner in Israel’s genocide in Gaza. I want you to acknowledge this fact, but you ignored it,” he stated.

Calling the remarks unacceptable, Minister Carsten Schneider immediately left the ceremony. The Mayor of Berlin and several German politicians also condemned the statement, while the Israeli ambassador publicly supported the minister’s response.

The incident underscored rising tensions surrounding the Gaza war during the festival, reflecting the increasingly political atmosphere of the event. Various human rights organizations have raised concerns and issued statements regarding the conflict, intensifying the debate on the international stage.
