Guinea is expanding its national campaign against dog-mediated rabies, moving from large-scale vaccination campaigns toward a structured, longer-term national programme, according to the World Health Organization.
WHO reported that Guinea vaccinated more than 88,000 animals in 2023, followed by more than 185,000 animals in 2024 and over 295,000 in 2025. The country plans to procure 500,000 additional doses through the WOAH Vaccine Bank in 2026.
WHO said eliminating dog-mediated human rabies requires sustained vaccination coverage of at least 70% of dogs in affected areas, combined with surveillance, community education and reliable access to post-exposure treatment.
As part of the expanded programme, school-based rabies education is also planned for approximately 300,000 students, helping children understand dog-bite risks and the importance of seeking medical care after exposure.
