The World Health Organization has issued its recommendations for the viral composition of influenza vaccines for the 2027 Southern Hemisphere flu season following an international review of influenza surveillance data.

WHO said influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses circulated around the world between February and August 2026, with influenza A viruses predominant in many regions.

For the 2027 Southern Hemisphere season, WHO recommended specific influenza virus components for both egg-based and cell-culture, recombinant-protein or nucleic-acid-based vaccines.

The recommendations are used by national regulators and vaccine manufacturers to develop and produce vaccines for the following influenza season. WHO said regular updates are necessary because influenza viruses continually evolve.
