Dhaka (HRNW)- Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal-2 has sentenced seven senior leaders of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League to death for crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 July-August student-led uprising. The verdict was delivered on September 15, 2026, in the absence of all seven accused, who are reportedly absconding.
The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, convicted the accused in a case concerning killings during the 2024 uprising. The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ properties.
Those sentenced to death are Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and Chhatra League General Secretary Wali Asif Enan.
The tribunal had previously completed witness testimony and closing arguments in the case. State-appointed lawyers represented the accused during proceedings, while prosecutors sought the maximum punishment.
The ruling marks another major development in Bangladesh’s legal proceedings concerning the deadly violence surrounding the 2024 student movement and comes amid continuing political and judicial repercussions involving senior Awami League figures.
