Belgrade (HRNW)- Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will resign from the presidency on September 27, 2026, and seek the position of prime minister in the country’s upcoming early parliamentary elections. Reuters reported that Vučić made the announcement on September 14, while parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 25.
Vučić said he would step down as president and campaign for the premiership under his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which has nominated him as its candidate.
The Serbian president is constitutionally barred from seeking another presidential term after serving two terms. His planned move to the prime minister’s office would therefore allow him to remain at the center of Serbian politics.
Serbia’s early parliamentary elections were formally scheduled for October 25, 2026, after Vučić dissolved parliament and signed the election decree on September 9.
Vučić has been a central figure in Serbian politics for more than a decade, having served as either president or prime minister since 2014. His decision comes amid prolonged student-led protests and growing political pressure on his government.
The upcoming elections are expected to be a significant test for Vučić and the SNS as a student-backed opposition movement seeks to challenge the ruling party.
