Lahore (HRNW)- Negotiations between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) over providing relief to the public from high petroleum prices have been delayed again, with the third round of talks now scheduled for Tuesday.
The government requested an additional day after two previous rounds ended without a final agreement. On the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, talks originally scheduled for Monday were postponed until Tuesday.
Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal contacted JI Deputy Chief Liaqat Baloch and conveyed the Prime Minister’s message that negotiations on the petroleum levy should be held on Tuesday.
According to Liaqat Baloch, the government has formed one committee for negotiations with Jamaat-e-Islami, while two separate committees have been constituted to address issues related to the petroleum levy and Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Baloch said talks concerning the petroleum levy would take place on Tuesday, while negotiations on the IPP issue are scheduled for Wednesday.
The first two rounds of discussions between the government and JI over the petroleum levy were held in Islamabad but concluded without a final outcome. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a long march toward Islamabad on September 20 as part of its efforts to maintain pressure on the government over public relief measures.
