UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has warned that the human-rights situation in Myanmar has reached an increasingly dangerous level, describing the crisis as a matter of major international concern.
His remarks came as the Human Rights Council began its 63rd session, where Myanmar remains among the major country situations under review.
The UN human-rights system has reported continuing concerns involving violence against civilians, displacement and restrictions affecting humanitarian assistance. A UN report released ahead of the Council session said Myanmar’s human-rights situation had fallen to a new low amid continuing violations and unregulated exploitation of natural resources.
The Council’s renewed examination of Myanmar is expected to keep the country’s humanitarian and human-rights crisis high on the international agenda.
