Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has said that limited negotiations with Iran are currently underway and indicated that Washington is not pursuing an aggressive approach toward Tehran at this stage.
According to a report by the US-based website Exolys, Trump has indicated that he may favor increasing economic pressure on Iran rather than ordering another major military operation, although Iranian officials have repeatedly denied reports of ongoing negotiations.
The report said Trump had been prepared to order another major military operation against Iran just a week earlier, but he did not threaten a new military action during his latest interview.
Speaking about Iran, Trump said that the United States is currently taking a less aggressive approach and holding limited discussions with Tehran. He also pointed to Iran’s severe economic difficulties, including high inflation and declining financial resources.
Trump said Iran is facing a serious economic crisis and claimed that the country does not have sufficient funds to pay its military. He further claimed that the US naval blockade had intensified the economic pressure on the Iranian government.
The US president also said that oil prices hovering slightly above $75 per barrel are having some economic impact on American consumers.
Trump’s latest remarks come amid continued tensions between Washington and Tehran and uncertainty over whether diplomatic contacts can prevent a renewed military confrontation.
