Beijing (HRNW): In a historic milestone for construction technology, China has successfully completed a 157.79-kilometer stretch along the Beijing-to-Hong Kong Expressway, marking the world’s first highway entirely built using autonomous, crewless systems. Throughout the entire project, not a single human hand touched the road during construction.
An Unmanned Fleet Controlled by AI and Satellites
A fleet of just 10 driverless smart machines, developed by Sany Heavy Industry, managed every stage of the engineering process. These advanced machines autonomously handled everything from asphalt laying and material compaction to real-time quality inspections.
To ensure flawless execution on the ground, overhead drones continuously scanned the terrain in real-time, while China’s Beidou Satellite Navigation System provided operational guidance to each machine with centimeter-level precision.
The ‘1+3+3+3’ Synchronized Formation
The smart fleet operated in a highly synchronized formation known as “1 Plus 3 Plus 3 Plus 3.” This operational structure featured a leading asphalt paver followed by organized layers of road rollers.
The entire fleet communicated seamlessly through ultra-low latency networks and advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, ensuring micro-adjustments during the paving process without any human intervention.
