Florida (HRNW) — Palestinian-American human rights lawyer and legal scholar Noura Erakat was arrested in Palm Beach County, Florida, during a public hearing concerning the county’s budget.
According to available reports, Erakat was speaking at the hearing against the county’s reported investment of more than $1 billion in Israeli bonds. Several local residents and protesters were also present to express their concerns regarding the investment.
Reports indicate that restrictions had been imposed during the hearing regarding the time allotted for public comments and the subjects that could be addressed. As tensions escalated, law-enforcement officers removed several individuals from the hearing venue. Erakat was subsequently detained and charged with trespassing.
Following her arrest, Erakat reportedly invoked her right to freedom of expression, while human-rights and civil-liberties groups also raised objections to her detention. The county, meanwhile, has presented its position regarding the scope and rules governing the public hearing.
According to reports, Erakat was released on bail following her detention, while the matter remains subject to further legal proceedings.
