The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors has voted to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council, marking the first such action against Tehran by the nuclear watchdog in two decades.
The decision, adopted on 9 September, followed continued concerns over Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA and the agency’s inability to fully clarify questions surrounding uranium traces found at undeclared locations.
The resolution received 23 votes in favour, while Russia, China and Niger voted against and eight countries abstained. Iran rejected the decision and said its nuclear programme is peaceful.
The development represents a major escalation in the international dispute over Iran’s nuclear activities and could place the issue back at the centre of Security Council diplomacy.
