The IAEA Board of Governors has unanimously adopted a resolution closing the agency’s long-running consideration of Syria’s undeclared nuclear activities under the former Assad government.
The decision follows increased cooperation by Syria’s new authorities and an IAEA assessment that outstanding questions concerning the country’s past nuclear activities have been resolved.
The agency said approximately 73 metric tonnes of natural uranium remain in Syria, primarily in the form of fuel rods, and are under IAEA safeguards.
The case dates back to investigations following the 2007 destruction of a suspected nuclear reactor at Deir al-Zor. Syria was later found by the IAEA to have failed to declare nuclear activities to the agency.
