The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a new warning about the growing connection between wildfires, heatwaves, air pollution and climate change.
In a new Air Quality and Climate Bulletin released on 7 September, WMO said increasing pollution from wildfires and heatwaves risks undermining efforts to improve air quality and protect human and ecosystem health.
The organization called for stronger atmospheric monitoring, including better observation of fine particulate matter, ground-level ozone and other pollutants.
The warning comes as UN agencies have highlighted the expansion of wildfire risks in Europe, including into regions that historically experienced fewer major fires. WMO stressed that air quality and climate policies need to be addressed together rather than separately.
