Kabul (HRNW) — Afghanistan is approaching the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power on August 15, 2026, with Human Rights Watch describing the country as facing one of the world’s most serious human rights and humanitarian crises.
According to Human Rights Watch, the Taliban’s increasingly restrictive policies have particularly affected women and girls, while fundamental freedoms have also come under severe pressure. The organization has called attention to restrictions affecting education, employment and participation in public life.
