Geneva (HRNW) — Today, August 9, 2026, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is being observed around the world.
On the occasion, the European Union said that Indigenous peoples in different regions continue to face discrimination and barriers to accessing essential services. The EU particularly highlighted disproportionate challenges faced by Indigenous communities in accessing healthcare.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples aims to raise global awareness about the rights of Indigenous peoples, including their culture, identity, traditions, lands and rights over natural resources.
The European Union emphasized the need to respect the rights of Indigenous peoples, eliminate discrimination and ensure their meaningful participation in social and economic development.
