Washington (HRNW)- US President Donald Trump has warned Iran that it is being given a final opportunity to reach an agreement with the United States before possible military action.
According to the World News Agency, while speaking to reporters at the White House, President Trump said he had once again postponed proposed military strikes against Iran at the request of Gulf countries in order to give diplomacy one last chance.
The US President said that several countries had contacted him, urging that Iran be given one final opportunity to resolve the dispute through negotiations.
Trump stated that this was the last chance being offered to Iran before what he described as “total destruction.”
Despite the warning, the US President expressed optimism that negotiations would move forward quickly. He said the first phase of the proposed agreement would involve the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping by Tuesday.
According to Trump, the second phase would focus on ending Iran’s nuclear program, although he acknowledged that this process would require more time to complete.
He added that both the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program were included in the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran in June.
Trump’s remarks came after he earlier announced that negotiations with Iran were underway. However, Iranian officials have maintained that discussions are currently taking place only with Oman and not directly with the United States.
