Tehran (HRNW)- Iran has strongly condemned what it says was a US attack on the construction site of the Darkhovin nuclear power plant in Khuzestan province, calling it a clear violation of international law and international nuclear agreements.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, the Information Center of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) stated that the United States targeted the construction site of the Darkhovin nuclear power plant on Sunday morning, describing the attack as a serious breach of international laws and regulations.
The AEOI alleged that the United States carried out a “terrorist and criminal” attack on what it described as one of Iran’s important scientific and technological projects, accusing Washington of attempting to obstruct the country’s scientific progress and national development.
The organization said the facility is being developed by Iranian scientists using domestic expertise and capabilities and represents a key national project.
The AEOI also emphasized that the Darkhovin nuclear facility is under the safeguards and monitoring of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement between Iran and the IAEA, maintaining that all activities at the site are peaceful and conducted within the framework of international law.
Iran further argued that any attack on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards constitutes a violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the IAEA’s governing principles. The organization cited IAEA General Conference resolutions, saying attacks or threats against peaceful nuclear facilities are prohibited under international norms.
The Iranian government called on the IAEA Director General to publicly condemn the reported attack, arguing that such actions undermine the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the international nuclear safeguards system, and the IAEA’s legal responsibilities.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran concluded that such actions would not weaken the determination of the Iranian people and that the country’s nuclear scientists would continue pursuing scientific progress and technological self-reliance.
