Fake ARY News Reporter Caught Extorting Money in Korangi Family Park

KARACHI: (HRNW) A case of impersonation and extortion has surfaced in the Bhains Colony and Korangi areas, where a local individual was caught posing as a representative of a prominent news channel to harass citizens and demand bribes.

The suspect, identified as Jan Akbar (alias ‘Langra Shaitan’), who reportedly works as a bicycle puncture repairman, was allegedly using a counterfeit ARY News media card to establish false authority. According to the administration of the Korangi Family Model Park, the individual first used the fake credentials to gain free access to rides and food. However, the situation escalated when he allegedly began demanding extortion money (Bhatta) from the park management.

Details of the Incident:

  • Blackmail Tactics: The suspect allegedly threatened the administration, stating he would air “fake news” to defame the park if his monetary demands were not met.

  • Verification & Confrontation: Upon becoming suspicious, the management verified the media card and found it to be a forgery.

  • Police Intervention: Local police were summoned to the scene. Faced with authorities, the suspect reportedly confessed to the impersonation, apologized for his actions, and promised to cease such activities.

While the park administration initially released the suspect on humanitarian grounds following his apology, they have since announced their intention to file a formal First Information Report (FIR) to pursue legal action for extortion and blackmail.

Local community circles have called for a crackdown on elements using fake media credentials to exploit the public, stressing that such individuals tarnish the reputation of the journalism profession.
